What Next For Police Tweets?

The people behind Greater Manchester Police’s Twitter experiment will be at Social Media Café tonight, we’re promised. The 24-hour trail was warmly received, but what next?

1. Given the public is assured when it perceives there is a greater Police presence, is it inevitable we will soon see ‘Bobbies on the Tweet’? Community Police Officers specifically tasked with tweeting updates. And will they be identified by name or badge number?

2. Will there be a Twitter dialogue between officers and the community? (Can residents ask a copper to go round check their house is ok?) And might this encourage more enterprising Neighbourhood Watch schemes to cosy up to the police?

3. How might this feed be layered on to other local news? Traffic updates, postcode information for house buyers, social services advice. Will there be opportunities for commercial messages?

Looking forward to it.
