Fans can already buy mugs, car stickers, badges and scarves, now Manchester is being treated to an outdoor media campaign raising awareness of FC United’s proposed new ground. The club had hoped to move to a new stadium at Ten Acres Lane in Newton Heath, part funded by Manchester City Council. Local government budget cuts mean this has now stalled.
FC United punch above their weight in terms of generating publicity (and have raised more than £345,000 of their own to fund the new ground); it’s unlikely they will react meekly to this latest setback. If (or when) they do move to the new ground, their fund raising and community involvement may well be a fine example of Big Society in action. Though I’m not sure they’d appreciate the comparison.
